Restoring Balance

NECF Plants Fruit Trees in Reserve Forests

Farmers in Dakshina Kannada faced relentless crop raids by wild animals due to deforestation. The destruction of fruit-bearing trees left monkeys and wild boars starving, forcing them into farmlands. To restore balance, the National Environment Care Foundation (NECF) launched an initiative, planting fruit-bearing saplings in reserve forests. Starting with 318 saplings in Belthangady and 600 more in Puttur and Sullia, NECF’s efforts promise a greener forest, reducing animal incursions and securing farmers' livelihoods.

Guardians of the Green

Activists Unite for Forest Conservation

On Sunday, 170 activists, including students, planted native fruit-bearing saplings, purchased from the Forest Department. Led by NECF convener Shashidhar Shetty, the initiative extends beyond planting—forest guards will monitor saplings via WhatsApp updates. Activists will return in November-December for protection measures and in February to create fire lines. NECF and Karnire Foundation will plant 2,000 more saplings near Moodbidri, while Alva’s College and Bhandarkar’s College plan similar drives. Their mission: a greener tomorrow.

Jalapayana

A Cry for Rivers

Children of Swaroopa Adhyayana Kendra and the Green Brigades of NECF sailed down the Phalguni River, singing a heartfelt Tulu song. Their boat rally, Jalapayana, carried a strong message—rivers are dying due to pollution! Activists warned that untreated waste is harming livelihoods. “If this continues, we will drink polluted water,” said Adi. Fishermen, once thriving, are now struggling. The event ended with the documentary Kadala Koogu, urging everyone to act before it’s too late.
